Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SL Benfica), commonly known as Benfica, was founded as Sport Lisboa on February 28, 1904, and renamed after merging with Grupo Sport Benfica in 1908. As a founding member of the Primeira Liga and never relegated, it achieved three consecutive Primeira Liga titles from 1935 to 1938. Led by legendary player Eusébio, Benfica won two consecutive European Cup titles in 1961-1962, becoming the first team to break Real Madrid's dominance in the European Cup. It faced financial crises in the 1980s but remained strong in domestic competitions, secured the treble of Primeira Liga, Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga in the 2013-14 season, and returned to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League in the 2022-23 season. With 38 Primeira Liga titles, 26 Taça de Portugal titles and many other honors, Benfica is one of the most successful clubs in Portuguese football. Its home stadium is the Estádio da Luz, and it is nicknamed "The Eagles" by fans.Benfica
